Protecting Your Dog in the Heat
While you know how to stay cool, do you know how to protect your dog from the sweltering summer heat? Since dogs can’t sweat like humans, it’s extremely important your dog doesn’t overheat. If they do, they can develop heatstroke – a potentially fatal disease. Here are five tips for protecting your pup during the summer months.
Dial Down the Walks
The extreme heat makes for extremely hot surfaces – especially cement and asphalt. If a dog spends too much time walking on the hot surfaces, they could burn their paw pads. Also, since dogs are so close to the ground, their body absorbs heat quicker. Schedule exercise/walks for earlier in the morning and evening when it’s cooler out.
Water, Water, Everywhere
Always make sure your pup has access to fresh water. If your dog spends a lot of time outdoors, make sure there is shade available as well as cool water.
Get Them a Haircut
If you share your home with a thick-coated pup, consider getting them a summer haircut to help them beat the heat. A shorter hairstyle will keep them from overheating – but make sure not to completely shave them. Pups need at least one-inch of fur to protect them from getting sunburned. At SPOT, we have a team of fully-trained professionals that specialize in summer haircuts as well as other services like nail trims.
Go for a Swim
Does your dog love the water? Treat them to a fun summer activity – swimming in a kiddie pool! It’ll help your pup beat the heat and you’ll enjoy watching them have fun!
When the temperature rises, restrict exercise to ensure your dog doesn’t become overheated. Also, resist muzzling your dog as it prohibits them from panting – their way of staying cool.
And remember, never leave your dog in a parked car – even if it’s just for a few minutes! Temperatures can reach 140 degrees or more in near minutes and could turn fatal.
